Tsukiji street food. No trip to Japan is complete without making a trip down the famed Tsukiji street food outer market. Oh! These cute delicous octopus balls Takoyaki definitely must be on your list.

What is Takoyaki and what do they taste like?

Takoyaki たこ焼き literally means fried octopus. Very popular snacks rounded shaped dough balls dumpling. Takoyaki was one of my first things on my must-try lists during my culinary courses in Japan.

The restaurant name I’d tried was Gindaco which is located in Ginza Chuo, Tokyo Prefecture. They have many types from traditional, teriyaki sauce, cheese with mentaiko mayo and many others. So I ordered 6 pieces and the price was 500 yen. However, the flavour was like a soft savoury pancake, crispy on the outside and soft from the inside filled with fresh octopus, vegetables served with sweet takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise topped with bonito flakes. The little balls are extremely hot. They are delicious! I ended up eating takoyaki every day.

The Market stretch across a couple of streets and alleys. The amount of street food offered can be overwhelming to any first-time visitors.

Here are Tsukiji street foods i have tried!

Firstly, skewered scallop on a stick topped with a generous amount of Unis. Uni is the Japanese term for Sea Urchin and is considered to be one of Japan’s most premium foods. The scallops are seared with a flame on a charcoal grill, giving it a nice smoky taste. The sea urchin on the top has somewhat of an acquired taste – you either like it or you don’t.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is called Japanese pancake and some describe it as Japanese pizza. The name comes from the Japanese meaning for “what you like” (okonomi) and “grill” (yaki). Street food stalls provide a variety of ingredients to create your own tasty combinations. It’s a heavy and rich meal made from flour, eggs, and cabbage. The other ingredients vary widely, but the cooked okonomiyaki is typically topped with mayonnaise, fish shavings, and a kind of sauce called okonomiyaki sauce which tastes like Worcestershire sauce.
