Deep Fried Food on a Stick Kushi-age. On this beautiful day, Naoko decided to invite me for an Izakaya experience known for its fun atmosphere and famous Japanese Deep Fried Food on a Stick! 串揚げ Kushi-age.

Japan Tokyo is a world unto itself and should be on your radar. Especially for anyone who appreciates food. My first Izakaya bar experience was with a colleague of mine Naoko from the sushi course near the old Tsukiji market.

WHAT IS IZAKAYA?

Izakaya is the everyday life of the Japanese people. It’s similar to our casual hangout bistro bars. Most Japanese people enjoy and have a good time at izakayas after work or weekends. If you want to get a glimpse of the daily life of Japanese people then it is a must that you go to izakaya.

MY KUSHI-AGE EXPERIENCE

This is were Naoko Suggested me trying these cute little skewers. You can either order Kushi-age as individual skewers or as a part of a set menu. Set menus will have anywhere between five to twenty skewers in a portion. So we started with a few, ending up tasting at least 40 various kinds. The selection that we have eaten was delicious. From Shishamo a small whole fish with fish eggs inside to Gari Japanese pickled ginger and many others. Dining at izakayas is a wonderful experience and best shared with friends!

WHAT IS KUSHI-AGE?

Kushi-age a Japanese popular deep-fried amuse bouche. The “Kushi” refers to the bamboo skewer and the “katsu” to the type of meat. Skewered on a bamboo stick with a panko-bread crumb coating. The most common items include seafood, lotus, scallops, shiitake mushrooms and others. However, various restaurants offer exquisite selections on their menus. Kushiage is served with a thin savoury sauce, similar to Worcestershire sauce. Cabbage leaves which apparently, the leaves help with the digestion. Kushi-age restaurants are generally set up as izakaya-style pubs or can be found in outltes serving tonkatsu.

THE IMPERIAL PALACE

Our next stop was at the imperial palace. Located in Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, a large park area surrounded massive stone walls. It is a short walk from Tokyo Station and is the residence of Japan’s Imperial Family. Such a beautiful place to switch off and disconnect from “the hustle and bustle” of the city.

Japan is truly a country of endless discoveries.
